Getting Real

An Exercise for New Beginnings by Carol A Lampman


Life contains many episodes of an ever evolving story. There are no bad chapters, only opportunities to learn, grow, and develop from life’s encounters.

The following is a three part exercise designed to be used anytime there is a desire or need for a change in any area of your life. The steps support the process of selfexamination, evaluating the changes that are wanted or needed, and the ultimate creation of a New Beginning.

You are the author of your life story. Is it time to begin a new chapter?

 Part 1 ~ 2015 Assessment

It takes courage to endure the sharp pains of self-discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.

You will need a quiet place and a realistic period of time to do part 1. If you are going to do this exercise, give yourself the time necessary to get the most out of the experience. This first step forms the foundation for what follows.

Take a moment to breathe and contemplate carefully each of the items on the list.

When you are ready, write down any thoughts, feelings, memories, or insights that emerge following each question of part one of the exercise.

  1. What worked well in my life during the last year?
  2. What brought me success or the feeling of accomplishment?
  3. What brought me a sense joy and happiness?
  4. What was the most important experience of the last year?
  5. What did not work well in my life this last year?
  6. What were my disappointments and / or regrets?
  7. What were my challenges and / or difficulties?
  8. What did I learn from these lessons and experiences?
  9. In what ways did I stop short or abandon myself / others?
  10. What would I change, add, or do differently?
  11. What needs to be “cleaned up” in order to be in integrity as I move forward?

a. Apologies to be made
b. Forgiveness to self or others.
c. Negative beliefs to be changed
d. Habits or behaviors to release
e. Taking responsibility on every level

Part 2 ~ Rewriting your story

It is time to outline a new chapter for the book of your life.

After the evaluation, do the following exercise. For the best outcome, make sure you are in a place where you will not be interrupted and take the time necessary to go through each of the following steps.

  1. Make a list of what you desire for your life. Just let yourself be spontaneous with this step. Consider your sense of purpose, your work in the world and your relationships.
  2. Now ask yourself the question for each item listed... “What is the experience I am looking for?” Take note of the responses that come.
  3. Now, breathe into your heart until you are relaxed. What do you find there? Listen closely to what your heart has to tell you. Your heart always knows what you need.
  4. Allow your intentions for the future to come clear to you. Take some time to evaluate this so that you are making fully conscious choices for yourself. Does this intention support the overall quality you desire to express in your life?
  5. Create a positive statement that encapsulates your intentions into a sentence.

Part 3 ~ Breathe your story to life

Once you are clear about the life you are ready to create, it is time to bring it to life. 

When you use your breath, you infuse your thoughts, words, and ideas with Divine Energy. You are limitless and so is your imagination. It is well documented that the unconscious mind does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. When you ask from your heart, your intentions combined with your imagination have the ability to take you across the bridge into the New Beginnings.

Begin to breathe as you imagine the life you desire’ See it as if it has already been transformed. With each breath, imagine how would you walk, dress, and talk in this new reality? See yourself living, loving and being the most you can be. Breathe health and strength into your body and feel the power and freedom that comes with a healthy life style.

Feel your successes. See yourself lovingly and openly interacting with others at work and at home. Repeat your positive statement while holding the images in your mind.

Breathe it all in... and feel it becoming part of you.

Now practice this imagery daily to reinforce its benefits. Some people like to use photos or images or create a power point presentation with pictures that keep them inspired on a daily basis.
