Getting Real

March Contemplation by Carol A. Lampman

Carol A. LampmanSpring is the season of fresh starts and rebirth. It is a time for cleaning out the old to make room for the new. Mother Nature prepares for this process by cleansing with rain and wind. Then the warmth of the sun and the longer days mark this new beginning with flowers in every color, shape and size. The ground, bushes and trees come alive and we are struck by the profound beauty and fragrance of nature. We open our windows and doors to experience the freshness of spring. As you watch the season unfold, I invite you to become more aware of the ways that nature lives in balance. There is no hurry, no skipping of steps and no procrastination either.

There are so many demands on our time and energy in today's world, that you may feel that it is nearly impossible to maintain a sense of balance. Daily activities are filled with the needs of growing families, stresses at work and numerous relationships that require attention. Add to this the burden of the electronic age where you are expected to immediately respond to phone calls, text messages and countless emails. It is easy to find yourself caught in an overwhelming, demanding and unmanageable way of living.

As we embrace this season, it is a perfect time to investigate and truthfully evaluate life as it has been and how you want it to be. Let us begin with a few questions. Take a few moments to really contemplate the meanings of these questions and even to write down what you become aware of as you consider the questions.

  • How would your life be different if you felt physically and emotionally balanced and connected to the world around you?
  • How would you feel if your mind was peaceful and you had a sense of spiritual wellbeing?
  • In a balanced life, there is time for relationships, self-care, work in the world, as well as time to rest and relax.

Are you asking yourself how this could be possible? There is an answer to all of this. The answer is to BREATHE! Yes, it is as simple as this. When you are stressed or unfocused, it contracts your natural breathing mechanism. Your actions and interactions become mechanical as you lose touch with your inner guidance. You might find yourself easily reacting or losing control because you have lost your center. You are out of balance. When you connect to your breath and pay attention to your breathing, your whole being reestablishes balance and begins function as a unit. There is a sense of harmony as your body relaxes, your emotions become still and your mind regains its quiet focus, giving you access to your resources.
